Buttons

Created for an SCBWI monthly prompt, this illustration explores how children transform ordinary objects into epic adventures. Buttons, leftover egg cartons, needles, and tiny household items become props in a dramatic imaginary world.

I introduced small animal characters — a brave mouse warrior, a spider, and other tiny creatures — turning everyday materials into a stage for high-stakes storytelling. In the background, the shadow of a cat looms as the unseen villain, adding tension and narrative depth without dominating the scene.

The overall composition carries an intentionally intense mood, reflecting how big and dramatic children’s imaginations can be, even when the building blocks are small and ordinary.
